- Hi there Raines--
-
- I get a listing of all the new messages daily so in effect I'm checking in
- every day. Stephen passed the word about using CIS vs Applelink. It really
- doesn't matter other than for transfering formatted files. for chatter the
- forum is great; however for business I'd ratehr use Easyplex.
-
- Tell the gang hi...I'm really getting psyched about PD ROM~. Ithink from
- everything I've seen it's going to be the best PD disc and everyone is going
- crazy about the price. They think its great.

- "Write Once, Read Mostly" sounds too much like it has trouble reading. i think
- I prefer Write once, Read Many.

- Ron,
- A nice thought, but somewhat impractical. I suppose one could come up with a
- box that hangs off the serial or parallel port of any computer, but then who
- would want to use it when there were (perhaps) units that tie in closely to an
- expansion bus, running at 10X the speed (or more) than is acheivable through a
- port?

- Jonathan,
- Is there nitty gritty tech data available for the Hitachi drive/controller? I
- guess my first question should be "Is it SCSI?" If so, then the nitty gritty
- info can consists of the command set supported. If not, then is info available
- on command set and hardware pinouts/timings at the controller end?
- Thanks.

- Well, all it takes is for the right person to get hold of a CD-Rom drive in
- order for a driver to be written. You are right in saying that the
- trackdisk.device won't cut it, but there are nuerous drivers for HDs that could
- be modified easily to handle the CD-Rom drives. The other consideration (right
- now) is the limit on partition sizes, but that will soon be history, giving us
- a 2 gigabyte limit per partition.
-
- Now... where do I get my hands on a CD-Rom drive (preferably SCSI), with full
- tech details on it, and a test CD-ROm, all at lowest possible cost? (toy budget
- is currently severely impacted by house purchase)

- Comstock, Inc. one of the largest stock photography agencies in the US. My
- interest in CD-ROM is recent, and I have a Lodown CD-ROM drive next to my Mac,

- Greetings, I'm a system manager for a research lab at Cornell. I'm interested
- in cdroms as a way of supplying documentation and worms as a way of archiving
- large quantities of data. One of my frustrations with what I've seen of the
- current cdrom technology is that the formats aren't standardized: it appears to
- me that one can't just get a "plain-text" disk that can be used without any
- special software. Am I right? Most of the data-bases seem to need their own
- special software to be read, so one can't just (for example) use MicroSoft
- Bookshelf on any system with a cdrom drive, one also has to get the appropriate
- software with it. -- this would, for example keep it from being used on a VMS
- system that has DEC's cdrom drive attached.

- You're right, it was originally a joke, first WORM drives could alMOST read.
- Original joke was Write Once, Read Maybe. Just goes to show you what happens
- when the 'press' picks up on something they really DON'T understand.

- Good day. I am a business student at The University of Texas at Austin and am
- interested in interactive educational tutors and/or textbooks. I would be
- grateful to anyone who might be able to help me locate any information about
- this technology. CD ROM and computers in general are a high tech junkie's
